Group Counseling To Improve Large Experimental Study Of High School Students Interpersonal Skills

Interpersonal communication, being a communicative processes of mental and behavior between individual and other persons, plays a key role both in the formation of good personality and in the development of individual socialization. Moreover, interpersonal communication not only affects the individual抯 cognitive and psychosomatical status, but also influences the group抯 relations, even the whole social ecological system, which including the peer, the family, the school, the community and the society. Good interpersonal relationship is a kind of psychological need of individual growth. Therefore, improving the interpersonal communicative capacity of middle school students and undergraduates is an important task for quality education. Based on advantages of different counseling schools, we designed a program of counseling and proposed our assumption: A person has his/her own potentialities on the one side, at the same time the person has some indolent nature on the other side. Moreover, his/her mental problems often can be traced different resources and their complicated interactions, such as the elements of environment, experience, consciousness and unconscious and so on. Therefore, the job of a client is to help persons to understand their problems through the process of counseling, and to find a proper way to explore their active potentialities. So how to improve middle school students and undergraduates?interpersonal communicative capacities becomes the focus of the study. In this study, 104 undergraduates and 118 middle school students were randomly selected form Yunnan normal university and the 30th middle school of Kunming, respectively, then they were tested and scored by the scales of SAD, SES, and SCL-90, their Mean scores and SD were recorded and being criteria to evaluate the level of metal health for above said corresponding subjects. In addition to, 32 middle school students and 32 undergraduates were respectively selected according to their scores of above said scales?test. Then, 32 middle school students were divided into two group: the experimental group (accepted the group counseling treatment), and the control group (non-group counseling treatment); 32 undergraduates were also divided into two groups based on the same procedures. All pretest scores of scales of SCL-90, SAD, SES were recorded and being as baseline, then those sores were further compared with posttest scores of above said scales respectively. The results showed that in the undergraduates?experiment group, after the treatment of group counseling, their scores of scales of SCL-90, SAD, SES were significantly changed, namely, their posttest scores were lower than their pretest scores (the baseline level), indicating the way of group counseling indeed improved the level of mental health of those undergraduates, they reduced their levels of social anxiety and interpersonal sensitivity, and I0 increased their self-esteem as well as improved their interpersonal communicative skills. But such changes didn抰 shown in the control group, which also suggested that group counseling be an effective way to students?mental health. However, to the middle school subjects, the effects of group counseling were not so good as expected. The causes to be explored in the following studies.
