Symbolism is a commonly-used technique in arl creation, and it is a most important characteristic of traditional Chinese art. This thesis will mainly focus on the symbolic characteristics of the mode of traditional Chinese embellishment.The mode of traditional Chinese embellishment lias a long history in a ancient china, which now still plays an important role in Chinese people daily life. It reflects the esthetic tastes of different ages and the moral values of different people so that it is deeply impressed and borne the mark of culture.From the content of the traditional emellishmenl modes, we can divide them into three different kinds according to its origins or sources: first from the religions, such as lotam and Buddhas; second from the myths and legends of ancient times; third from the patterns of goodwi 11 .From the point of view of its colors, the most typical one is the so - called"Si Shen Wen", which is an employment of the "leads of Five Colors".From the development of traditional modes, it shows that only those who possessed the "Artistic Potentials" mode can enjoy a long enduring life, such as dragons.Today, the traditional mode still is of most significant meanings to our modern design and construction. As it tries to set free more energy in a still moment, obviously it is in agreement with the artistic form which the modern design tries to seek.So, in the course of the modern design, it is a very effective device to borrow some traditional modes with symbolic meanings to convey a certain taste, or a certain emotion so as to reflect the spirit and the nationality of certain country or area.
