Due to its concise nature, M. H. Abrams literary theory of four essential elements has been widely applied, in the 20th century, to the analysis of many phenomena in literary creation. This paper presents a comparison of Chinese literary theories proposed in Pre-Qin dynasty with Abram's elements, in an attempt to bring a clearer picture of our ancient theories.
