Ling Shuhua made special contribution to Chinese modern women literature. She selected the subject matters of women and children that she once was familiar with to do characteristic and creative writing. She objectively disclosed a part of Chinese women's living and survival conditions in the turn of a new era of May Fourth and the old and established her own female narration: she showed heartfelt sympathy to the marital tragedies of ladies of boudoir; she specifically depicted some new females' passivity and dilemma in their marital relation and indicated the implicit cultural meaning in it; As for some vulgar women in the corner of family, she also made objective examination and lenient criticism. Ling Shuhua was good at portraying children's temperament and interests in daily life and her collection of English autobiographical novellas. Ancient Melodies demonstrates her deep complex of child and daughter. Her aesthetic attitude out of material gain and the traditional artistic cultivation affected her narration: her portraying techniques, poetic artistic conception and the concise language together form graceful and restrained prosaic style. The woman author's dual attitude of both critical and lenient make her novellas' theme somewhat ambiguous, while her clear reminiscent perspective and dual narrative passion in the English work. Ancient Melodies, produce special aesthetic effects of openness. This article also discusses Ling Shuhua's patriotic passion and the relation between her writing and some foreign writers' in order to comprehensively summarize and study this woman writer's thought and writing.
