This thesis is to sort out, investigate and study, in the sense of sociology, the feminine characters successfully created in the female novels in the 1990s for the purpose of getting aware of the issue of the women' s liberation in the 1990s. It consists of five parts.I. Background: It presents the pluralism and prosperity of female novels in the 1990s under the broad background of the development of the Eastern and Western civilizations.II. The main body of the thesis is the second, third and forth parts, which explores in the sense of sociology the three kinds of contradiction and perplexity confronted by the women in the novels in representing the women liberation. The first kind is the contradiction and perplexity of the dual characters in career and family. One side is how the modern women deal with the conflict between career and family, how they get along with the male bosses in the modern malecentered society and how they survive and develop. The second is the contradiction and perplexity in love and matrimony. When commodity economy enters the cultural background in the 1990s, the love and matrimony become more complicated. The separation between love and sex, the breaking down of families, the emotionalcrisis and the interposition of " the third person" throw the modern women whoseemed to be born to seek ideal love and marriage into the " nirvana city " . The third kind is the contradiction and perplexity caused by women themselves on affection and sex. The self is in a sense the formidable enemy of a person. Therefore how to triumph over oneself is a crux. The female writers explore the innerworld of women based on their personal experience and persist in seeking the way to the women' s spiritual liberation, which is the great contribution of female literature to the modem society.III. Conclusion: Reading the spectacular female novels in the 1990s, one can find that although greater achievement has been achieved in solving the problems on women liberation, new problems and new challenge have appeared with the development of the society. Therefore women liberation is in a sense a foreveron going topic. Suggestion is also made that female writers should broaden their vision of artistic representation to depict more lower, countryside females.
