The 20th Century Evolution Of Style And Fashion Research

The purpose of this research is to forecast design styles of the future by studying previous styles. Through probing into the rules of evolvement and internal causation of design styles in the 20th Century and using some related knowledge of arts and design theories for reference, I described the process of design evolvement in the 20th Century and the coming design trend in this dissertation.There are various factors that lead to formation and decline of design styles. How to find the determinants is where the shoe pinches. After determining the purposes and methods of this research, I enumerated the main design styles in the 20th Century, and selected 26 design styles to describe the process of evolvement.In addition, the impact of arts, science & technology, culture & consumption, economy & market, and environment on design styles are analyzed in this dissertation. From the aspects of constitution of taste and function, the formation and development of design styles in the 20th Century are discussed. Furthermore, the fashion of car and woman are selected out to study by drawing the evolution charts for them.Finally, I present some hypotheses and potential rules of design styles' circle, factor of impact, trend of change etc. by illustrating diagrams. In this information era, less and less time is needed to finish a circle of design styles, and the status of coexistence of various design styles will could not be changed in the near future. With the green and healthy life styles gradually being accepted by public, more and more importance will be attached to environment in the process of design. Before arrival of the next social tide, to some extent, design methods of expression and reproduction will tend to be balanceable. In addition, I have also suggested something about how to validate and amend these hypotheses in further studies.
