The paper employs the theories of sociology to make a systematic study on the inscriptions for the Buddhistic sculptures in the Northern Dynasties by analyzing the social elements such as the religions,the cultural accomplishments of the populace,and the institutions of economy and policy in the Northern Dynasties. The paper is divided into two parts. The first part gives a survey of the Buddhistic sculptures in the Northern Dynasties and seeks to probe the reasons of prosperousness and pervasiveness of the inscriptions for the Buddhstic sculptures at that time. Through the thorough research on characteristics of the writing and inscribing of the inscriptions for the Buddhistic sculptures distributed in Henan,Shandong,and Shanxi respectively and chronologically,the second part of the paper illustrates how the calligraphy styles of such inscriptions are influenced by the background characteristic of times,the regional cultures and the geographical surroundings and points out the aesthetic value of the calligraphy of the inscriptions for the Buddhistic sculptures in the Northern Dynasties.
