| It was a heaven-falling and earth-cracking epoch in the late Ming Dynasty. In the ancient times of China, the late Ming Dynasty was the most glamour and most attractive period, apart from the Spring and Autumn Period and the Warring States Period. In the political aspect, civil service and the imperial power conflicted continuously because of the highly centralized and extremely developed imperial power, which caused the natural endowments and heavenliness of the imperial power suffer the widespread doubt. Hence it appeared the pure discussion (Qingyi) of Donglin which was out of office and the flippant and impudent of the Crazy Dhyana (KuangChan), both of them had doubt about the autocratic imperial power. Among them the Crazy Dhyana was the outstanding representative, they started getting away from the unification of the imperial power, getting away from engaging in the official career's interference, and started looking for the new method to carry out their political ideals. Which was the cause that orthodox traditional scholar opposed strongly to it, among them Liu Zong-zhou was a typical representative.Being a pure Confucian scholar, Liu Zong-zhou had always insisted on the principle which was "the supreme ruler the supreme ruler and his ministers the minister", and always hoped to cultivate the supreme ruler's morality , and thought that the supreme ruler's morality had been ruled which caused the world peaceful. Therefore, on the one hand he wanted to fight against the supreme ruler's fault by the Confucian principle; on the other hand he wanted to combat the abuse of the the Crazy Dhyana and Donglin so as to uphold the authoritativeness of the supreme ruler. In order to reach the goal Liu Zong-zhou insisted on his policy of benevolence and work together with one heart in his political ideals, and "ChengYi and ShenDu" in his administrative method, and he expressed his opinion which was "the unification in the Dao and Shi" with his "DaShenzi" in his personality ideals. The supreme ruler being the political fundament which Liu Zong-zhou insisted on firmly couldn't limit the increasingly dilation of the imperial power, and also couldn't resolve the increasingly sharpenning conflict, because Liu Zong-zhou did not know that making the whole empire tranquil and happy was not only a question of ethics, it wasalso a system problem, and an economic problem. |
