This thesis mainly examines the mistakes of American Westward Movement in the late 19th century, and analyses the causes and influences of these mistakes.The author figures out that many mistakes were come into being as a byproduct of the Westward Movement, which include despoilment of the soil, water, forest, mineral and wildlife resources and the environmental damage. With the growth of the western economy, a lot of wasteful infrastructure and extravagant expenditure were taken place. These mistakes resulted in serious consequences, which lead to several negative effect on the long-term regional economic growth.When trying to expose the causes of the mistakes, this paper highlights, among the numerous factors, the relatively rich resources of American West, Federal government's land and laissez faire policy, Protestantism and individualism.
