Artistic Language Means

The connotation of artistic language belongs to extended connotation and it is opposite to the direct denotation of general language. The extended connotation of artistic language is decided by the symbol system of artistic language. From the view of language itself, artistic language belongs to the category of parole. But from the angle of art, artistic language belongs to the department of art. Artistic language is a symbol system that uses symbol code of general language and also has its own system. So the symbol system of artistic language has duality and its sense is implication. Artistic language belongs to the second symbol system. Naturally the connotation of artistic language belongs to extended connotation because the connotation of the second symbol system belongs to extended connotation.The connotation of artistic language must be extended connotation, yet language that has extended connotation is possibly general language instead of artistic language. So the direct denotation of general language is a premise to the extended connotation of artistic language.Because of the extended nature of connotation of artistic language, the sense of artistic language has flexibility. The sense of general languageis the meaning of concept, reference or logic. But the sense of artistic language is the meaning of feeling, aesthetics or potential meaning. Semantic flexibility of artistic language is based on the non-referent feature of artistic language.The building of extended connotation of artistic language benefits from the effects of self-reference, strange, metaphor and image. All these effects have a common point that is to break the normally syntagmatic and paradigmatic relations of language and form a supernormal collocation, which makes the meaning of artistic language become implication.Since the denotation of general language is direct denotation, it has specific, single and stable characteristics. The signified of artistic language is the content of signifier of artistic language.Secondly, the connotation of artistic language is extended connotation that produces on the base of direct denotation of general language. If the extended connotation of artistic language is accepted commonly, it is likely to inverse direct denotation and come into dictionaries.Thirdly, the building connotation of artistic language benefits from the effects of self-reference, strange, metaphor and image.Fourthly, the connotation of artistic language has vague, variant, unstable and temporary characteristics.
