What is probed into in this essay is: In Chinese painting history , under the circumstance of the gradual spread of Western learning ,the appreciation of the beautiful which comes from the art communication activities between East and West in different cultural situation causes the effects to Chinese traditional painting. These effects make us realize that we should stand on the multicultural position to improve the development of Chinese painting.The ideal of the appreciation of the beautiful is the central expression of the appreciation of the beautiful's pursue which is forced in the special historical stage and also is the highest crystallization of the certain social civilized life and ideology in the field of the appreciation of the beautiful. Art, as an appreciation form with vision entails the intension of the different cultural spiritual history of China and the West. From the point of view of the artificial works characters of thoughts, once the exotic things appear before people, the visual feeling of freshment will produce strong power of attraction immediately , so the strange things can mostly motivate the new inspration of creation. The appearance of exotic colors in the painting field is the definite phenomena which produced by the conflict of different cultures.In the middle and late of Qing Dynasty the foreign missionary artists, represented by Lang Shining, introduced the western painting which had the style of traditional realism into China, and then poured a new look into Chinese painting. At the beginning of 20thCentury , in China, represented by Xu Beihong, the oversea Chinese artists introduced western realistic paintings style into China extensively, then, the epoch-making effect to Chinese traditional painting was caused. For Lang Shining and Xu Beihong, these two grew up in different cultural circumstances and had made close contact with their own cultural arts. But as for their different times and cultures, so, in the communicative activities between eastern and western culture, they formed different painting styles and views of the appreciation of the beautiful, and caused different degrees of effects in the Chinese painting field of the different time. Their artificial activities offer excellent factual proofs for us to probe into the effects to the development of Chinese traditional painting caused by the artificial communicative activities between the East and West and the artificial positions we should adopt.
