In 20th century especially in the late century, the mainstream style of Chinese painting is realism. Since the May 4th Movement of 1919 or the New Culture Movement, the whole Chinese painting world was filled up with various new ideas of painting and artistic movements. But as far as the social conditions in 20th century and the choice of national needs were concerned, realism and its methods were chosen while "modernism" was ignored or antagonized. From late Qing Dynasty to the Republic of China which covered about 50 years is a period when artistic producers and consumers' appreciation habits transited from literati painting to realistic painting. And the study, of this transition means much to the history of modem painting. This thesis makes the use of new study method in the field of painting history study. Under the premise of attaching great importance to outside influence, the author tries to find out the artistic producers as well as those they serve within our nation and chase down their deep cultural psychology of realistic trend and historical context. Then the author analyzes how their interest trends interacted and infiltrated in 20th century's changeable social tide, which fatherly promoted the deep evolvement of realistic painting style. From the macroscopical painting history's point of view, the author tries to avoid putting this thesis into a "impactę¢¤esponse" mode "artistic movement". In this thesis the author puts forward his own opinions about study methods of Chinese latter-day painting history and expects they will be given proper attention in future study. Besides, the problem raised and the process of looking for solutions must benefit further progress of study work.
