Shi ming, written by liuxi in the Eastern Han Dynasty, is famous for its large-scaled and collective usage of sound-exegesis, and so, most of the researches on Shi ming are centered on its sound-exegesis. Putting sound-exegesis aside, this paper tries to discuss the disyllabic and polysyllabic words in the explanatory vocabulary of Shi ming .This paper classifies all the disyllabic and polysyllabic words in Shi ming's explanatory vocabulary into 2 kinds and 8 categories on the basis of objective and practicable rules, describes and analyzes each of them, compares them correspondingly with those in works of the same and near ages, and then summarizes the characteristics of the disyllabic and polysyllabic words in Shi ming's explanatory vocabulary as a whole: it has the general characteristics of the common written Chinese in the Han Dynasty and its own special characteristics as well. Furthermore, growing tendency of word-formations of all kinds in the vocabulary of written Chinese from Xianqin to the Han Dynasty can be seen roughly from it. Then this paper makes textual criticism on some disyllabic words (or explanations of disyllabic words) which appear in Shi ming but are not collected into the Great Chinese Dictionary in order to provide some referential materials for enriching and making more perfect the Great Chinese Dictionary.
