Xin Hai Revolution was a milestone event in modern Chinese history, which overthrew the feudal autocratic system lasting for over 2000 years andfounded the Republic of China. The Peace Talk between South and North directly led to the end of the feudal autocracy. After the talk, due to the new autocracy exerted by Yuan Shih ?k ai when he took office, democracy and republic vitually existed only in name. Consequently, it' s matter - of -course that people attribute Yuan' s autocracy to the peace talk, which, how-ever, hides the truth of history. Wu Ting - Fang, the representative of the South in the talk, accordingly became a notorious figure. The same image is also found in occassional reference to him described in history books. This paper takes Wu' s participation in the peace talk as a clue, trying to give a comparatively impartial evaluation to Wu Ting - Fang and the peace talk.part I : Reasons for the Peace Talk between South and North. By analysing particulurly the situation of military affairs politics and economy of both sides, this paper points out that the occurence of peace talk between the two came out of a certain objective need, in which big powers played a role as a catalyst. Thus denying the traditional view that "the peace talk only re-sults from one certain factor".part II :Wu Ting- Fang's participation in the peace talk on behalf of the South. This part lays stress on three reasons why Wu Ting - Fang became a representative of the South in the talk: First, the premise, there was a short-age of the competent in South; second, the basis, Wu had made great achievements in the negotiations;Third, the key factor,Wu had changed his political attitude.part HI: Wu presided over the peace talk of the South. This part mainlyillustrates Wu' s struggle with the North at the first stage on four issues, namely, cease - fire state system the national conference the treatment of the Qing Dynasty and the minorities.pare IV : Wu' s participation in the peace talk of the South. This part mainy presents how Wu, guided by Sun Yat - sen and other leaders, strived for the best benefits for the South at the second stage of the peace talk. The paper conludes that the Peace Talk between South and North is a choice of history. Comparatively speaking, it was a better way adopted by the revolutionists to attain their goals in then condition. Therefore, it' s beyond reproach. There were many reasons for Yuan shih - k' ai' s autocracy, howev-er, which had no intrinsic relationships with the Peace Talk between South and North. Wu Ting - Fang although had his limitations since he lived in that old times, still, he fulfiled his post with credit in the peace talk, and contributed a lot to the downfall of the Qing Dynasty.
