The article deals with the problem of graphic symbols in graphic design and the teaching about it.Before the creation of characters human being had already begun to use graphic symbols to record their ideas and exchange experience of life and labor. Since the 20th century, it has been a popular way to exprese information by graphic symbols. It avoids the problem of time and space and avoids misunderstanding by different languages. It has been more and more important in the exchange of ideas in graphic design. So, to research into the meaning and features of graphic symbols, and their creating principles and also their circumstances is very important in graphic design and teaching.The article trids to use the theories of psychology , aesthetics , communication to probe into the problem of graphic symbols in graphic design. The first part of the article is about the meaning of graphic symbols, their features and creating principles and also different ways to use them, the second part of the article is about the teaching methods of graphic symbols, the article also mention the situation about the teaching of graphic symbols in Chinese graphic design teaching.
