From the studying of the grotesqueness of the network literature, this thesis tries to find out the historical cultural roots and realistic ideological bases in the emergence and development of the network literature. It aims to explain the necessity of its emergence, to explore the particular values and significance in its ideological connotations and in artistic expressive forms, and consequently to offer people a new insight and a new way in viewing the network community and in studying the network literature. This thesis consists of five parts:The first part displays the characteristic of grotesqueness of the network literature and the phenomenon of people's little attention to it.In the second part, the reasons of this phenomenon are discussed. The major three reasons are: deficient recognition of the characteristic of grotesqueness, deficient recognition of the network media literature and of its values and significance to human culture, and thirdly, the complex situation of the network literature. So the historical roots and realistic bases of its emergence and development are probed into from two ways: (1) from historical and theoretical points of view, i.e. folk humorous literature and Bakhtin's theory of grotesqueness ;(2) from realistic and practical points of view, i.e. network media culture and post-modernism ideas.Part three discourses the artistic expressive forms of the characteristic of grotesqueness. The grotesque style, which has a long historical cultural roots and profound realistic life bases, is embodied by a set of particular artistic expressive forms: among them, the material sex lust, understatement, parody and linguistic grotesque are mainly introduced here. The fourth part formulates the ideological connotations of the characteristic of grotesqueness of the network literature. They are characteristic of the view of world, of freedom and equality, and of post-modernism The ideological connotations include and express unofficial. freedom-equality centered views of the world and methods of dealing with people and matters, marked impressively with post-modernism ideas. The last part explores the values and significance of the characteristic of grotesqueness of network literature from its grotesque features, that is, unofficial, legal and Utopian.
