The paper aims at exploring Chinese historical aesthetic thoughts. In Chinese history, Wei----Jin and Southern----Northern Dynasty was not only chaotic, but also enjoyed tremendous spiritual freedom. So the aesthetic ideas then were highly developed, which established the basic framework for Chinese classical aesthetics. This is why the paper can find some traits of Chinese ancient aesthetics in aesthetics of that period. The paper believes that both the Chinese traditional philosophy and classical aesthetics in some sense and to some degree regard human life as the ultimate aim, which are about what kind of person we should be and what kind of life is the most valuable. Their identical aim makes it possible to explore the aesthetic ideas through philosophy. Viewed from itself, Metaphysics was the inevitable result of the study of Confucian classics in Han Dynasty, and it was the spiritual weapon against the spiritual yoke. Metaphysics was known as knowledge of " Xuan Yuan", advocating " Ben Mo Ti Yong" to attain the foundation of universe by revealing their noumenon. Though seeming purely imaginary, it was much close to the mental needs of " Shi- ren" in that period. It tried to find an ultimate foundation for the human's existence by researching into the thing-in-itself. It also attempted to confirm the infinite, independent, self-contained personality noumenon by affirming the thing-in-itself. Metaphysics, by investigating the relation between phenomenon and noumenon , tried to reconcile the contradiction between "Ming Jiao" and " Zi Ran"----the contradiction between the depressing social reality and the strong desire for freedom. It was the outcome of Shi-ren's experience, observations and pondering of the contradiction, conflict and pains of human life, which enriched human life and cultural implication. To sum up, Metaphysics was the reflection of the timespirits, the theoretical embodiment of the strong sound that transcended life pains, built aesthetic personality, and realized freedom. If we can grasp the aesthetic implication of Metaphysics, we can fully understand the aesthetic spirits of that times. This paper investigates into aesthetic implication of Metaphysics via the conception of " Zi Ran", believes that: firstly, from the perspective of the theoretical evolution and development of Metaphysics. The conception of " Zi Ran" was the basic spirit of Lao-zi. Zhuang-zi inherited and furthered the ideal " freedom" embodied in Lao-zi, and poetized the highest value of a free state of mind in the human's ideal existence. Such connotations contained in the ideal "Zi Ran" as " freedom", " zi-cheng" or "zi-sheng" and so on were expounded and tested from the angle of ontology in Metaphysics, especially by Guo xiang who embraced the attitude of "self-aware". All these pushed the key spirit of Metaphysics----the free spirit, to the highest state. And "Zi Ran" was ultimately the key conception running through all aesthetic schools. Secondly, considering the historical evolution and development of Chinese aesthetics, the aesthetics in Wei-Jin and Southern-Northern Dynasty was a crucial developing period. The paper holds that the gain of this key position is resulted from the following factors: firstly, the aesthetics of that period realized the ideal " beauty in Zi Ran" of Chinese aesthetics in human's practical existence; secondly, it purified human's souls; thirdly, it gave limitless meanings to human' limited life existence; fourth, it returned the ideal of human's free spiritual life to the very natural, practical life.
