The Symbol ¡¤ Grotesque ¡¤ Carnival

Charles Dickens, the 19th British famous critical-realism novelist, and his works were translated into China in early 20th,and since then they were highly noticed by us. He created a typical character named Scrooge which representatives stingy in one of his noted works, A Christmas Carol. In this book he also deeply revealed a relationship between the man and the capital society as the follow: all people and their abilities were controlled domineeringly under the ambition of achieving the money. And in the procedure, the power of the wealthy made the characters split up, but also the man who possessed the wealth could not comprehend. Although it expressed optimistically by author that the humanitarian ideal is authentic and inevitable, the work which embodied the artistic talent of its master's is the whole thing of solemn or strict. It took advantage of the traditional resources in the culture , but aesthetically invented something of special artistic skills that appeared in the modern fictions as well. From some point of view, the paper points out the artistic quality that was covered permanently in the book. The firstly, from the view of archetype, it denied thoroughly both the separation and degeneration of humanity by the characters he created in the heritage background, it was filled the desire of the humanitarian's return and reflected the needs of human feelings. So it has the metaphor and symbolism forever, and took an important play part in the Genesis. The secondly, the method of grotesque, appeared in the work which made the time chaotic, formed a colorful picture of man's world and ghost's world, ghosts and a man, employer and employees, fantasy and the reality, tears and laughter. Grotesque is not a generally unity of funniness, but it put funniness into- dignified narration, which awakened the feeling of humanitarian. It at as great depth discovered the work's theme and made it a perpetual symbol. Thethirdly, the author used not only Omniscient narration but complex restricted narration, which showed the author's talent of depicting characters and expressing theme, which showed some techniques in the later some modern novels. By these Dickens found a way to expose the reality, a way to connect the present and the idealism that made the myth style on the basis of criticizing reality.The paper shows more skills of classical writer which link up his early novels with his later works. It represents the author's optimism, wrathfulness and anxiety of himself. Under the view of the modern art criterion, we also find that a noted writer had such a specialty as inaugurating new methods in inheriting traditions.
