Jiangsu Education General Academy (JEGA), a very famous nongovernmental organization in modern China, made great efforts to push the local educational and political affairs, which had an important influence at that time. In the last years of Qing dynasty, following the institutional reforms initiated by the empire government, JEGA devoted itself to developing educational affairs in Jiangsu province. In the after-days of the Revolution in 1911, JEGA changed from the thought of evolution to advocacy for the Revolution, which is a common attitude to the dramatic social and political changes for the most of nongovernmental organization in that era. In this thesis, by the studies for JEGA before and after the Revolution of 1911,1 try to revalue the historical causes of the success and the failure of both the reforms in last Qing dynasty and the Revolution in 1911.Therefore we can understand the transformation in modern China more critically. This thesis consists of preface, text and conclusion. In the preface, I explain the significance of the theme, and give a survey of the studies about it. Then, I try to set forth my angles and methodology for analysis. The text is made up of four sections. In the first sections, I explain the background of the foundation of JEGA. In the second section, I analyse Jiangsu Academy, the archetype of JEGA, of its foundation, members and activities. In the third section, the revised charter and the main activities of JEGA are discussed. In the last section, the functions of JEGA in the Revolution of 1911 are mentioned. At the same time, I explore the possible causes of its advocacy for the Revolution and its separation of the revolutionists. In the conclusion, I give an objective valuation to the functions of JEGA before and after the Revolution of 1911 and its position in the Chinese modern history .
