Since a long time ago, there have been two different comprehensive ways to read Shi and Ci. One is Writer-centered Theory, which is concentrating on the background and character of the writer. The other is Text-centered Theory, which is concentrating on the text itself by separating the writer and his/her work so as to make sense just based on the text. Whether Writer-center Theory or Text-center Theory, it's just a kind of way to read Shi and Ci unilaterally. So my point is to raise a concept named as "Widely Defined Text", which is on the contrary of traditional "Narrowly Defined Text". Compared with the latter one, "Widely Defined Text" concludes more details that are needed to read and apprehend the artists' work. The concept of "Widely Defined Text" is a mixture of Writer-centered Theory and the Text-centered Theory. It's based on them and finally beyond them. What's more, I'd like to quote Wen Tingyun, who is both a poet and a dissipater in late Tang Dynasty, as a supporting proof. I will compare and analyze the Shi, the Ci and the character of Wen, in order to find out the coherence under his Shi and Ci.After the analysis, a conclusion can be drawn: Though the idea and style of Wen's Shi and Ci seem too different from each other, they still have a hidden logic coherence. No matter how distant between Wen's work and his character, they can reach a same start-point that is deeply planted in his heart. So the character of Wen is not conflicting, but logically integrated.
