The keynote of Dream In the Red Chamber has always been the key to the"Hong Study". Once there's an reasonable explanation for it, other arguments could be settled easily. However, because of this or that reason in the past, there is a lack of deep interpretation of this novel from the perspective of the very context, or a tendency to mistake"Cao Study"for"Hong Study"and thus overstress the verification of lineage. Also there's puzzle-guessing interpretation of the characters and events in the novel, or simply equalizing the characters in the novel with the characters in real life which gives rise to point-stretch or one-sided interpretation. Based on the enquiry into and reflection on the fault of the past one-hundred-year research, this thesis starts with criticism on the main points of keynote of the novel in the past research, and in accordance with the context-centered principle, come to the conclusion by elaborating the ideological presentation and core position of the"emotion", together with its root in ancient Chinese literature------the keynote of"Dream in the Red Chamber"is what the writer pointed out clearly in the first chapter-----emotion.This thesis falls into five parts:The first part state briefly the purpose of this thesis which, based on the criticism of the traditionally-thought keynote of the Dream in the Red Chamber, pointed out that the idea of"emotion"as a keynote is a complete system to study; define and analyze this keynote to correct the one-sided interpretation of the traditional keynote, and probe into the root of this emotional keynote.The second part gives a brief review of the research on the keynote of the novel in the past century, list systematically the predecessors'main viewpoints in this field, and point out their limitations, parochialism and irreverence with the keynote.The third part elaborates the detailed representation of the keynote of"emotion"in the novel and the core position of this keynote in the novel.The fourth part sums up the historical evolution of the concept of"emotion", concluding that the direct source of the emotion-centered keynote in the novel comes from the emotion-centered ideology in middle Ming Dynasty.And the last part analyzes the rationality of diversity of the interpretation of literary works and gives a final conclusion to the emotion-centered keynote of the novel.This thesis generalizes the keynote of this novel from an emotion-centered perspective, which is not only the amendment to the writer's motive, but also the restoration of keynote of the original works.
