It is already 14 years since I began to learn traditional Chinese painting. As I lack the specialized knowledge on the rice paper, ink, paint and so on that have always been accompanying me for the 14 years, I have met with many difficulties and frustrations in my art creation. It can be said that I was ignorant and uncultured in the field of materials before I came to China. It is hard to find professional literature related to this field in Korea, and there is no teacher who can offer me effective guidance timely, either. Even painters of the same specialized field do not like to share specialized knowledge with each other. So I have met with numerous hardships and resistances in ,my process of learning on materials. After coming to China for study, the courses in the Class of Drawing Materials of Department of Traditional Chinese Painting satisfied my curiosity, helping me stride forward to a more professional field of knowledge. Moreover, the rich data provided by Chinese scholars such as Zhu Zihong, Jiang Xuanyi and so on in the study on colors of traditional Chinese painting, has given me a great deal of help in my art creation. The difference between traditional Chinese painting and Western painting lies in the difference in location, emotion and culture, but the direct diacritical point is the difference in materials for drawing. The study on Western painting materials has developed into a system, and the works and data in this research area is very rich, which has provided a lot of information for painters so that they may produce more excellent works.I think, a painter must have knowledge on materials, and such knowledge is very necessary and important for our art creation. Based on such a thinking, I have decided to write a paper on materials. Through my study on materials, I have further understood the fundamentals of painting, which is very helpful to my art work. This paper is written by a foreign student who loves and studies traditional Chinese painting, and it lacks specialized analysis, so, please understand it. This paper is roughly divided into two parts: Chapter One is about materials and colors; Chapter Two is the introduction and explanation of the writer' s own works. As Chapter One emphasizes the study on materials, it is greatly different from Chapter Two. Please understand this point, too. Moreover, I extend my heartfelt acknowledgement to Professor Hu Wei and my Chinese classmates who have offered me great help and guidance.
