British prose jottings, flourished since 18th century, had a great effect on the form of prose style in the new literature creative work of "May Fourth Movement" in China. Liang Yuchun together with Qian Zhongshu are influenced to some extent by British prose jottings; meanwhile, their works reveal characteristics and spirits of Chinese traditional prose.Liang Yuchun was a comet in the field of prose creation from the late 1920s to the early 1930s. His characteristic, knowledgeable witty and poetic prose jottings are mainly discussion essays, which are distinct from Lu Xun and Zhou Zuoren and made great contribution to the development of Chinese contemporary prose.Qian Zhongshu, an up-and-coming youngster in the circle of contemporary prose, returned to homeland from Europe in the late 1930s. During this period, anti-aggression war literature was flourishing. "Humorous literature" proposed by some cynic writers was still popular. Although he didn't become a writer using pen as weapon to advocate for politics, his neutral stand and identity of writer and scholar at any rate made him view problems with principle and keen eyesight than the so-called "Gentleman-group" writers did. 《Write on the edge of life》 published in 1941 was his first prose collection. Though his prose written in the period of "anti-aggression war" didn't directly reflect important theme, there are obvious complimentary no matter he describes man or talks about life, and the author showed his despise and caustic satire to philistine, degeneration, and hypocrisy in the natural humor. As stylists, Liang Yuchun and Qian Zhongshu pay much attention to propagate their original idea about knowledge and life in their peculiar discussion jottings. This kind of jottings always utilizes generous ancient and modern historical culture information as foundation of their point; when carrying out discussion, they made full use of artistic measures such as narration, depict, lyric, dialogue, imagination and association, logical thinking and thinking in images used at the same time resulted in figurative and lyric discussion; when demonstrating their proposition, they took up many measures such as positive demonstration, negative rebuttal, detailed analysis and summarizing sublimation to thicken and deepen the proposition until they made their point clear; with elegant and free diction, sentimental style and unusual structure, their jottings are quite unique. This kind of jotting prose pioneered a brand-new prose style in the history of Chinese prose and made an indelible contribution to the development of Chinese contemporary prose art. From the perspective of stylistics and under the background of the development of Chinese contemporary prose style, the paper tends to analyze and compare similarities and differences of two writers' prose to study their prose's' unique style and its position and influence on the developmenthistory of Chinese contemporary prose, to grasp the relationship between two writers' prose and Chinese contemporary prose, to thoroughly investigate the internal connection between British and French jotting and two writers' prose, and hence to soundly evaluate British-French essay's value on the development of Chinese contemporary prose.
