| When human beings of puberty complete the transition from children to adults, and start to form their identities, they will face many problems of physiology and psychology. While the young girls' growth will be more difficult, because of the particularity of their physiological growth and traditional social thought. They must be more independent, in order to solve all kinds of growth problems effectively. Because they are restricted by their bodies and the outside world more than the same age boys. The contemporary young adult fictions show us those problems and the independence in their own way. This thesis selects more than ten long young adult fictions in contemporary china and western countries, to find out how the fictions represent those growth problems confronted by contemporary young girls. It focuses on the similarity among young girls, and mainly discusses the difference of growth between young girls and young boys, but the difference of young girls' growth between china and western countries is neglected. This thesis consists of three parts.Part I :This part defines "young adult", "growth" and "young girls".Part II: This part analyzes those works by two criticizing methods. The former part uses close reading to show that contemporary young adult fiction can not display the physical growth of young girls well, while the expression of psychological growth are more sufficient. The latter part uses archetypal criticism to find out the archetypes of ancient ritual. Most of the archetypes were displaced, deformed, personalized or modernized, but no matter to the growth of young girls or strengthening appeal of the works, they are magical.Partlll: This part points out that the similarity of the growth of young girls and young boys should not be neglected as well. |
