This article is aimed closely at the subject of Shanghai life written by Shanghai school woman writers. With the analysis on social background and logic of the works and with the study of both the description of Shanghai in the works and the four-generation woman writers(the first generation is represented by Zhang Ailing and Su Qing, the second by Wang Anyi, the third by Chen Danyan and Pan Xiangli and the fourth by Wei Hui and Mian Mian), this article tries to explore the generality and individuality when this roving but stable group shows their interest in this city. The whole article is composed of five parts. PrefaceThe preface concludes a definition to the concept of Shanghai school woman writers and in the meantime explains the reason why Shanghai has become the largest congregating place of woman writers. Chapter 1This chapter traces the development contrail of novels written by Shanghai school woman writers. With a comparison analysis, it indicates the development and variability of the works of the four-generation Shanghai school woman writers are the results of the differences among their social background, life experience and values concept. From their works, Shanghai turns from a common city in troubled times into a spiritual homeland of all the rovers, then further a dreamland of all bourgeois and finally a drama stage for wayward girls. Chapter 2This chapter gives the description of the generality from the contents of their works. It probes into the reason why from their eyes Shanghai presents a continuous line of secularity and craving for material life. Chapter3From an aesthetic point of view, this chapter finds out the generality from their works and studies why when they depict this city, they are all full of reminiscentmoods and pays all their attention on trifling details.Chapter 4This chapter criticizes the gain and loss of the works of Shanghai school womanwriters. It affirms that the writers have contributed unique experience for thedescription of urban city in Chinese culture. With an urban image full ofsensibility and humanity, Shanghai is distinguished from other cities. Thelimitation of the writers is found in their entirely imaginary petty bourgeoissentiment and over-reliance on the trifling life.
