Physical Property Characteristics Of The Vv Type Sentence Investigation, And Their Discourse Function

The sentences with reduplicated verb in Chinese Language are those of low transitivity and the majority of them are usually encoded as sentences functioning as background in the context,which transfer less important information.In this dissertation,an investigation is made involving 95 verbs and 450 sentences with reduplicated verb.By calculating the degree of transitivity of those sentences with ten parametres of transitivity, say, Participant, Ki-nesis,Aspect,Punctuality,Volitionality,Affirmation,Mode,Agency,Affected ness of O,Individuation of O,We can draw a conclusion:The sentences with reduplicated verb are usually lower in transitivity than sentences with single verb. And more,the further survey of the context of those sentences prove the hypothesis that such sentences usually act as background of the discourse.In the final,a proposition is made that the grammatical meaning of the reduplicated verbs can be of omittable quality,which is in accord with the grammtical status of such sentences as background.
