Gou (outline or contouring ), Cun (texture strokes), Ran (washes), Dian (doting) are the main elements of the formulas employed in Chinese traditional landscape paintings, and the main technique for the plastic formation isto draw with the mid-tip of the brush. In the 20th century, these conventions could be hardly surpassed even under the strong influence of the Western painting. Mr. Fu Baoshi was the pioneer in the revolution of painting language for the creation of modern landscape. When he tried to express the spirit of true nature, he moved from the worship of leaner movement to that of the painterly expression by creating the so called Baoshi Cun wich is using the spread-tip of the brush for texture strokes. This approach not only enhanced the painterly effect, but also demonstrate the traditional charm of brush works. He paved the way to the true reform of Chinese landscape painting language innovatively. Now in modern landscape paintings, we will notice more often the performance of painterly expression rather than that of leaner movement, and it is all due to the reformation introduced by Fu Baoshi.
