The continuation of styles according to tradition and vision, in regard to era and environment come together to form the longitude and latitude of art history. That is to say, the history of a visionary style is in fact owing to the work of artists in a particular, fixed historical period. It is also through the work itself that we come to understand the history of visionary styles. Any powerful visionary style will have an influence on contemporary or future artists; this influence will inevitably lead to an obstruction in the evolutionary process of the said styles. This paper will, through comparative analyses, examine the evolution of visionary styles in a sequential manner, and will reveal during this process of evolution, three dimensions and their impetus. The first dimension promotes evolution of realistic and non-realistic visionary composition. Non-realistic visionary composition include imagination and symbolism. Visionary impetus is what enables stylistic composition to be realistic, but non-realistic visionary impetus enables imaginative and symbolist compositions. The function of the second dimension regards the language of visionary expression and how this encourages intimacy or distance with the viewer. The impetus of the third dimension addresses that spirit of the noble or ignoble in a work of art. These three dimensions basically illustrate the history of visionary style and its impetus.
