Franz ·Schubert (1797 -1828), is a brilliant representative composer of the Austrian art songs and in his short life of 31 years composed more than 600 "Lieder". It is said that he brought the revolution of Lieder to the end solely on his own. Winterreise, one of his vocal cycles, drew from profound sources and was of a close-knit structure, which integrated the genius and mature skills of the composer and his peculiar composition psychology. The Winterreise-cycle adopted the thematic image of "vagrant"which is Schubert's favorite and he poured his affection of love, sorrow and his death complex which was caused by depression on the protagonist. This thesis attempts to give an analysis of the deep-rooted factors underlying Schubert's composition from his composition psychology, the situation of his times and the related humanistic milieu; furthermore, the songs themselves will be studied and analyzed. By finding out the proper connection between these two kinds of analyses, the thesis hopes to render some help in the accurate and correct understanding of its singing style and appreciation.
