Lv-Ying (1915-1969) is a contemporary literary critic, an aesthete as well as a translator. This article mainly elaborates his realistic thoughts which are characterized by "truthfulness" and "poetic quality", of which the former is fundamentally important. The article attaches great importance to this issue for two reasons: Firstly, Lv-Ying is frequently referred to by academic circle nowadays, but the scholars mainly pay attention to his personality displayed during the "Hufeng event" rather than his thoughts themselves. Secondly, Lv-Ying achieved his fame mainly as an aesthete. The study on his thoughts mainly deals with his aesthetics rather than his literary thoughts in early years, leaving the latter unconcerned. As the result, this article will focus on his literary thoughts. The basic thoughts are mainly unfolded in two aspects: the general content and its internal discrepancy as well as their relations with the political background of the particular times. The article begins with the general explanation of Lv-Ying's new realistic thoughts that focus on two concepts: "truthfulness" and "poetic quality". The article first analyzes the connotation of these two concepts as well as their relations, through which derives the discrepancy between his literary thoughts and aesthetics. After elaborating the main points of Lv-Ying's literary thoughts, the article further expounds its historical development which can be roughly divided into two periods. First is the period around the discussion about "objectivism" between Lv-Ying and He-Qifang who was the representative of the leading literary thoughts. The second period is around the year of 1949,during which Lv-Ying's literary thoughts tended towards the leading ones while originally it shared more features with Hufeng's literary thoughts that were supposed to be against the leading ones proposed by Mao-Zedong in his famous speech. The change of Lv-Ying's points reveals the internal conflicts in his thoughts. The article further attributes the internal conflicts to the influence of the contemporary political background, which can be divided into three periods. Accordingly, Lv-Ying's literary thoughts displayed different features during the three periods. In the first period, namely, the earlier part of the Anti-Japanese War, the political control on literary creation and criticism was comparatively lenient. Lv-Ying attached more importance to the "poetic quality" of literature. During the second period, inflicted by the powerful ideology, he partly changed his original thoughts, which resulted in the internal discrepancy in his thoughts. The third period saw the proposal of the new literary policy entitled "Shuang Bai" which set forth the free development of different forms and styles in the arts so as to reach a flourishing socialist culture. Lv-Ying set forth his famous aesthetic concepts, which were in conflicts with his literary thoughts. In conclusion, Lv-Ying's thoughts are deeply influenced by the contemporary political background. However, the influence of the political background on Lv-Ying's literary thoughts is enforced through the medium of individual literary critic. So the article analyzes the three kinds of relations between literary critics of the times and politics, by which evokes the further reflection about Lv-Ying as well as more contemporary literary intellectuals.
