Longing for one's hometown is a common and undeniable sentiment for all of mankind. It is also the focus of this paper, which attempts to explore the cultural underpinnings of "hometown sentiment" literature during the Pre-Tang and Tang Dynasties, and attempts to classify and analyze this type of poetry from these two periods. This paper has five parts. Chapter one summerizes the works of 20th century scholars in this field and points out some of their shortcomings. Chapter two discusses the cultural base formed by "hometown sentiment" from three different angles: agricultural society, blood relations, and the patriarch system. Chapter Three dissects the unique characteristics of "hometown sentiment" poetry from the Pre-Tang era and analyzes its progression through time. Chapter four discusses how this affected Tang Dynasty poetry, and how Tang Dynasty poetry in turn used it as a foundation and thereby produced its own new style of this old motif. Chapter Five summarizes the achievements of Tang poetry in this area using poetic imagery, artistic conception and word choice as the three standards.
