This essay reviews all comments on the Rong Yu Tang edition of Shui Hu Zhuan(including the preface of Loyal Shui Hu Zhuan with the author's name as Li Zhi, the four articles with the author's name as " the little monk Huai Lin", all the critics at the end of every chapter , the interlinear notes and the top notes and the various marks, etc.), trying to reveal the reviewer's conceptions, his theoretical contributions and their status in Chinese novel-commentary history.Chapter One: this chapter answers the question concerning the copyright of the works. Up till now there're many different opinions in academic circles, some think it's Li Zhi himself who made the commentaries and annotations, while most people consider that it's Ye Zhou under Li Zhi's name doing the job. After studying various materials, this essay regards Ye Zhou other than Li Zhi as the reviewer.Chapter Two: this chapter gives a general point of view on the comments on Rong Yu Tang edition of Shui Hu Zhuan. The main questions are as follows: the motive of the writing, the standpoint, the subject, the social criticism, the appraise of the characters and so on.Chapter Three: this chapter deals with the theoretical contributions of the comments on the Rong Yu Tang edition of Shui Hu Zhuan, which included not only social but also art criticism, this essay will analyze these comments as follows: the sources of novel creation, the content of novel and the writing skills.Chapter Four: this chapter points out the value and significance of the comments on the Rong Yu Tang edition of Shui Hu Zhuan. It has a direct influence not only on the thought but the novel theory on Shengtan Jin, who was a famous commentator and editor of ShuiHu Zhuan. In addition, it was regarded as very important in Chinese novel-commentary history.
