The paper gives us a preliminary investigation and analysis of the verbal notes in the Foreign Students-oriented Chinese Textbooks. Considering the variety and different characteristics of current International Chinese Textbooks, the author chooses Elementary Chinese and Chinese Elementary Course as the research objects. Before starting the paper, the author has made a research into the corresponding questions, and all of the statistics stated in the paper come from the questionnaires towards the foreign students.After the research work, the author has drawn the following conclusion:Ⅰ It's popular in our country to use English notes as the main verbal noting method in Foreign Students-oriented Chinese Textbooks. A careful analysis and classification of this kind of notes refers us to the fact that, on the one hand, the one-one noting style adopted in English noting method basically agrees with the terse and clear traits of the textbooks; on the other hand, students, though expressing appreciation of the overall English noting effects, also point out some aspects that are not yet quite satisfactory, such as the inaccuracy and incomprehensiveness of the notes.Ⅱ In view of the status quo of Foreign Students-oriented Chinese teaching in the country at present, it's recommendable to include other languages, especially Korean and Japanese, besides English in the verbal notes when compiling textbooks in the future, while a multiple-language noting method may also be acceptable. In fact, this point has received particular interest of the foreign students, as is shown in the questionnaires conducted by the author.ⅢIt's important to highly emphasize the role of Chinese notes in the compilation of Foreign Students-targeted Chinese Textbooks. In the past, the use of Chinese notes has been confined in the explanation of new words in the course of class teaching, and few people seriously take into consideration using Chinese notes in compilation. However, it's increasingly a consensus that, in Second Language Teaching, the use of mother language or intermedium language should be avoided as much as possible. So far as verbal notes are concerned, target language, in this case Chinese, should be widely used to explain the target language. To our pleasure, there have been attempts of using Chinese notes in some textbooks, and I truly hope that Chinese Notes-based Foreign Students-oriented Chinese Textbook will meet with enough consideration of the textbook-compilers and Chinese teachers in the near future.
