With the transforming of the cultural formation as the background, and the post-colonialism as the theoretical basis, this thesis tries to expound the movies which reveal the cities of the Chinese main land from 1997 to 2003. The focal points are about the fashionable forms of expression and the state of existence of the people wholive in the cities.In the movies of recent years, we can see all kinds of fashionable means ofexpression in time and space. The time of the cities is superimposed, mingled, stopped, cut, strengthened and highlighted, while the space appears plane, unusual, exaggerated, limited, oppressive and unsteady. But most of these means are just the imitations of western movies. What's more, the unsettled state of our cities and the immaturity of modernizations and city culture always make the creators raise doubts and queries for the cities. So the life of the leading characters in their movies are full of contradictions, choices, miseries, worries, confusions and puzzles, all of which are also the feelings of the creators themselves.Under the influence of post-colonialism, the cities in our movies seem unreal, westernized and become a mere formality. If the creators want to make their movies more mature, they should take a positive attitude towards the differences and conflictions between eastern and western cultures, and get a clearer understanding of our cities' real situations. |
