| The theory of mind -nature in Tanjing is the kernel idea of Zen, and there have been a lot of researches about it On the basis of the studies of some scholars, this dissertation discusses the relationship between the theory of mind - nature in Tanjing and its history and development This thesis takes a view of the theory of mind - nature from its history and development, not from the theory itself.This thesis sets two viewing aspects. One is how the theory of mind - nature in Tanjing came into being, which is the history of this theory. The writer holds there is an illustrating way from "category" to "nature" in Tanjing, which leads to the theory of mind - nature. Therefore, the theory of mind -nature in Tanjing has the characteristic which is the same structure for nature and category. Tanjing is one sutra, so the terms and conceptions in it are still the basic terms in traditional Buddhism. Though Tanjing keeps the original terms of Buddhism, the innovations of it are the different annotations to these terms. Tanjing gives the new explanations to category of traditional Buddhism from the way of mind - nature. This method from category to nature is very obvious. For example, the matters in category of Western Pure Land, sitting in meditation and confession are all annotated from nature.The other is the development of the theory of mind -nature, referring to how the theory of mind and nature in Tanjing is carried out in religious cultivation. The characteristic of the practice of Zen is there is no difference between religious cultivation and nature. In Tanjing, one can be Buddha or not, and the foundation to be Buddha are attributed to one's mind - nature. Religious cultivation is nature, and nature is religious cultivation.The thesis is composed of prologue, text in three parts, conclusion and two appendixes.The prologue introduces the main idea and the structure of this dissertation.Part one summarizes the theory of mind - nature, illustrating the meaning of "mind" and "nature" in Tanjing, and the relationship between "mind" and "nature" on the basis of the former researching achievements. "Mind" in Tanjing mainly refers to the real mind of human. Nature is the essential attribute of mind, and the essence of mind's invariability. Nature controls mind, mind is the foundation of nature, and mind -nature are consistent.Part two is the kernel one, which sums up the examples in Tanjing to illustrate the way from "category" to "nature". Category is things' appearance, which can appear outside and can be imagined in mind. Nature is the real thing of its own, that is, the unchangeable essence which can not be affected by outside environment.Part three summarizes that religious cultivation is the same with nature. In traditional Buddhism, religious cultivation and to be Buddha are two phases: process and result. However, Tanjing emphasizes sudden realization, which expresses that religious cultivation is the same with nature.Part four views the status of the theory of mind - nature in Tanjing and its influence on the later Zen from the aspect of Buddhism history.The Conclusion sums up the theory of mind- nature in Tanjing.Two appendixes conclude the discovery and studies about different editions of Tanjing, Huineng's biography and studies bout his ideas, which provides backgrounds of this dissertation. |
