Contradiction is the common characteristic of most aesthetic writers. As a representative of Aestheticism, Wilde often expresses contradictory thoughts and opinions in his works. Critics have been arguing about this topic constantly. Their arguments are so sharp that they even have effects on how to give objective and fair comments on Wilde. In this thesis, the author thinks that Wilde's contradictions are made intentionally. His intentional way of writing makes his works full of vitality and meaning. This thesis contains three parts.In the first part, the author introduces the status quo of the research on Wilde and gives her own opinion. In China, researches on Wilde are still in the state of beginning. Former researches thought that his contradiction had lowered the value of his theories and works. The author gives different opinion.In the second part, the author mainly introduces Wilde's contradictions. Aestheticism emerged in a complex time and this made aesthetic writers full of contradictions in their works. But different with other writers, Wilde's contradictions are intentional.In the third part, the author gives her opinion on how to evaluate Wilde and his works. That is using a dynamic cultural identity to evaluate him. Contradiction is a kind of transcendence. Living in such a contradictory time, it's very praiseworthy of Wilde to surpass himself constantly in the process of his artistic development. In this part, from the relationship between writer's theory and works, the author explores how to evaluate Wilde, an artist who has shortcomings in his personality, with a dynamic cultural identity.
