Ink flower and bird Chinese Paintings is one of the most important carriers of the scholar paintings of China. Zhao Mengfu, the scholar painter of the Yuan Dynasty, established the painting trend of "imitating the ancient style and looking for the style of freedom" of his age. The scholar paintings pushed the development of ink paintings. Against a background of expressing the subjective senses with objects and emphasizing the expression of subjective emotions of the Yuan Dynasty, many painters favoring the ink style appeared at that time, among whom Wang Yuan represented the greatest achievement of the flower and bird ink painting of the dynasty.Few comments have appeared in recent years, which offers a great reason for the profound study of Wang Yuan's flower and bird ink paintings. This thesis points out that, due to special historical reasons, the flower and bird paintings experienced a great change in the Yuan Dynasty, as is shown by the popularity of pure black and white ink flower and bird paintings. Black and white ink flower and bird paintings either focused on the expression of subjective emotions or paid attention to faithful description of objects. Among those changes, the most important one was the development of the black and white bird and flower paintings. Wang Yuan acted as the first one to open the style. Replacing the colored paints with black and white ink style means that the painter has to study the subtle use of light or heavy ink instead of simply creating colorful paintings. We can say that this is a creation of surpassing the surface beauty of things, a creation that, through special methods, profoundly and fully exposing the pure nature and beauty of things. Wang Yuan, on the base of former achievements and his own hard study, successfully consummated the passage from emphasizing on the use of color to the use of subtle ink, which agreed with the new aesthetic style. This thesis manages to adopt a historically materialistic method to systematically study Wang Yuan's achievement in flower and bird ink paintings and its influence, and make an objective criticism on his status in the history of flower and bird ink paintings. What's more, we try to draw a conclusion of his artistic achievements in order to better inherit the tradition of bird and flower paintings.
