The Song Dynasty of China had a history of more than 300 years,and its painting art continued to develop on the basis of that of the Sui,Tang and Five Dynasties.Flower and bird paintings in the Song Dynasty have fruitful achievements and colorful styles;therefore,it is worthy for future generations and we to learn from those paintings.Although there are many talented and outstanding artists of flower and bird paintings in dynasties after the Song,their expression techniques have almost started from the Song Dynasty.During that time,Song Huizong Zhao Ji was the most brilliant master in art,especially in flower and bird paintings.He abstracted different merits of other artists and therefore became excellent in flower and bird paintings.Deng Chun praised Zhao Ji's paintings as “the best of all shapes and the six laws”.Zhao Ji's flower and bird paintings had great impacts.On the one hand,these paintings largely influence academic flower and bird paintings.On the other hand,they importantly impacted on literati flower and bird paintings in the Yuan and Ming Dynasties.For example,Zhao Ji's paintings laid a solid foundation for the creative forms and theoretical explorations of literati paintings in the Yuan Dynasty,and the Xuanhe Painting Academy which was under the direct guidance of Song Huizong Zhao Ji led to the vigorous growth of literati paintings.“Integration of poetry,calligraphy,painting and seal cutting” is a typical feature of literati paintings,which is a fixed form in Zhao Ji's works,especially his flower and bird paintings.Zhao Mengfu in the Southern Song Dynasty,and Shenzhou as well as Wen zhengming of the Wumen Painting School in the mid Ming Dynasty inherited and developed literati paintings so that this kind of art became flourish,which shows that Zhao Ji had an important and influential impact on the forming of literati flower and bird paintings.Zhao Ji's royal effect of "painting for all people" affected the creation,education and evolution of art in the past millennium.This paper,via several representative paintings of Zhao Ji,analyzes his influence on coloring and the artist's aesthetic interest of literati flower and bird paintings in the Yuan and Ming Dynasties.This paper has four chapters.The first chapter discusses the basic development and styles of literati flower and bird paintings,analyzes the literati sentiments of Zhao Ji's flower and bird paintings and also outlines his contributions to the development of literati flower and bird paintings in the Yuan and Ming Dynasties: Zhao Ji is a pioneer of literati flower and bird paintings in the Yuan and Ming Dynasties.The second chapter mainly discusses the cause of formation of the flower and bird painting style,the main characteristics and the main artistic achievements of Zhao Ji.The third and fourth chapters,via comparative analysis,analyze the contributions of Zhao Ji to literati flower and bird paintings in the Yuan and Ming Dynasties.The third chapter mainly discusses Zhao Ji's impact on the coloring of literati flower and bird paintings in the Yuan and Ming Dynasties.His ink-wash flower and bird paintings have the greatest impact on the coloring of literati flower and bird paintings.In his ink-wash flower and bird paintings,which embody not only the neatness of academic flower and bird paintings but also the sentiments of literati,Zhao Ji used a lot of ink and a slight of powder,and absorbed the merits of Huang Quan and X u Xi's flower and bird paintings.The fourth chapter discusses Zhao Ji's contributions to the artist's aesthetic interest of literati flower and bird paintings in the Yuan and Ming Dynasties from the aspects of “poetry,calligraphy,painting and seal cutting” and creation theme of literati paintings.
