Abstract: Shoumin Bian was born in a poor family and had never obtained any official rank. However, he was steep in poems, calligraphy and painting, especially that of flowers, birds, fruits. He was most prestigious in the Yangtze and Yangzhou regions for his paintings about splash-inked wild goose on reeds, hence the nickname Goosereed Bian. He was ranked as one of the eight personalities with special talents in Yangzhou by Xia Ling and Zhi Huang. This article gives a brief account of his artistic style concerning the subjects matter, composition and ink manipulation The paper deals with his subject, composition, and ink, at the same time, the papers explores his paintings by means of classification, statistics, comparison, analysis, and induction. Apart from it, the paper probes into his aesthetics on paintings. Generally speaking, as an influential painter and man of letters, Bian is worthy of being further studied from the aspects of painting characteristics and aesthetics. |
