The concept of "focus"originates from photography. As different artistic genres, photography and painting do share a considerable number of elements in common and have a special relationship with each other. Therefore, the author borrows this concept in an attempt to observe and interpret, from a new point of view, the history of painting as well as some characteristics related to plane painting. The invention of perspective enabled people to establish, rationally and scientifically, a three-dimensional space with which to communicate, on the base of a two-dimensional one. Perspective requested the existence of a focus in vision, that is, a substantial focus; The invention and wide spread of photography shook and affected painting, and the main trend of painting turned to expressionism and started the attempt of "suppositional focus"supported by new optical theories; Cubic explorations deconstructed and reconstructed the focus in plane painting and developed the multi-focus, also known as the "scattered focus". And the modernist movement began.
