| The present dissertation consists of a close examination of Scott's impact on European and American novels. It is divided into three sections. The first section introduces what Scott contributed to European novels and the fact that few researchers are interested in Scott in China. It also explains the subject of the dissertation. The second section has four chapters. It mainly analyses Scott's effect on France, Russia, America, and some other countries' novels, and at the same time explains the new elements that Scott's followers provided for the history novels. Scott first made a notable impact on France; his customary novels were changed into a study on the society by Balzac and ethics novels by Hugo. Scott also affected Russian's historical novels, especially The Captain's Daughter and War and Peace. The former shows the "Russian fate" while the other is a masterpiece. In America, Scott had so much an impact on Cooper that to some extent we can say Cooper's novels are editions of Scott's Scottish novels; meanwhile, the tensions in Scott's novels also provide crucial insights into the cultural work of New South fiction. In other European countries, especially Poland and Italy, the strong love of Scotland in Scott's historical novels promoted these countries' writers using their pen to express the love to their own countries. The last section demonstrates the defect of my theses. It also offers another point of view for the future study on Scott. |
