The article analyses Xu Dishan's unique contribution to our modern literary circles from three aspects of his religious feelings, images of characters he created and the artistic features of his works. Literature expresses human sufferings in a poetic manner and religion conveys ideology of people in the suffering world dreaming of happiness. The common concern for plight is a significant point between religious cultural values and the 20th century Chinese literature. In the first part, the article analyses the causes of Xu Dishan s religious feelings through the influence of Buddhism Daoism and Christianity on him, even his many successive ideas of "unhappiness since coming to this world", "endless sufferings", "forgiveness and self-saving", "brotherhood", "letting nature take its course" and "inaction". It further explores that the unique experience contributes to his wringing psychological system, his works content, characterization and literary images application. Part two analyses two different types of male and female images created by Xu Dishan, especially he successfully created Xiguan and Minming representing his thoughts about religion, Chuntao representing his worldly thoughts. The last part demonstrates his works' distinct artistic charm and style by colorful plots, changeable and orderly structure and proper languageXu is a typical representative of Chinese intellectuals from loss and depression to being strong and positive. He is not only a great writer, but also successful religious researchers with many achievements. He was keen on religious philosophy, and full of a pessimist, but lifelong love for the motherland's great feeling incited his untiring pursuit of democracy and progress. When the anti-Japanese War broke out, he joined in the real struggle of the great patriotic sentiment.
