"The form of Artistic Style was decided by the purpose and the inner requires of artist."Wilhelm Worringer, the German esthetician once said. The disappearing of one style was due to the"different purpose", instead of the scarcity of skills. When the traditional style of lineal couldn't represent present-day life, the life itself reacted on the changes of painting language's structure mostly. This thesis described and researched the change of lines in painting which from classicism to modernism, and from formality to individuality in the developing process of Chinese Portraits Painting.This thesis was divided into three parts. The first part of it analyzed the reason why Chinese lines which continued the traditional linetype developed constantly according to it's self-discipline, and the influence of classical philosophy, aesthetics, correlative art(calligraphy) and social fashion for the main thought of painting. The painting-tools, the physical medium of painting, act to the growth and changes of lines in Chinese Portraits Painting.The Second part was the main body of thesis, it narrated the changes of linetype from tradition to modernity according to history development, and expatiated amply in different typical artists. Section one reviewed the characteristics of classical formal lines, and made clear that it do effected a lot in the given history circumstances.
