Mao Dun has portrayed "the time female" and the national capitalist, two seriesof Character images, but compared with "the time female", the national capitalistimages research taked insufficiently. Moreover, looked from the existing nationalcapitalist's correlative research results, the rich implication which this vivid seriescontains have not been truly promulgated for the reason of the long influence of theideology. This article tries to make thorough inquiring into this vivid series from threeangles of leading characters, author and readers. The first part embarks on the analysis to the national capitalist image from theconcrete texts. The national capitalist displayed the tragedy hero's characteristicthrough their spokesman Wu Sunfu. This characteristic, besides character ownrevealing in performance, has some latent narrative reasons. In Midnight, its prototypeorganization—hero narrative pattern can been seen if we penetrate the complexunorganized words form. The ancient and modern myth fables in China and abroaduse one kind of fixed pattern to narrate hero's story. Midnight agrees with such pattern.Wu Sunfu is also precisely taking that mystical risk to complete his heroic personality. However, it is a pity that he cannot gain the eventual victory because of the failure inthe last link of that risk, so his character catches tragedy color. Wu Sunfu transmits thelofty tragedy spirit to readers by resisting in three kinds of difficult positions. WuSunfu's defeat is inevitable, the law of the development of the society has decided hisdestiny. Looking from this kind of angle, Midnight displays the characteristic similarwith Chinese ancient novels. Chinese ancient novels often controlled the character by"the destiny", therefore, used the entire knowledge angle of view. Because Midnightcontrols the national capitalist's destiny by "the rule", it has also selected the similarnarrative skill. Midnight shows historic lateral section of the third decade of lastcentury. Wu Sunfu is national capitalists' representative of that time. Mao Dun hasmolded different national capitalists in different historic periods. These images haveformed mutually relations and completed the narration about national capitalist'sgrowth together. The second part discusses relations between the leading character and the authorMao Dun, who narrated the hero story. Through text analysis of the first part, manyquestions float onto surface. Why could Mao Dun choose the national capitalist aswriting object and mold them like the ancient Greece hero? Though in the 30s of lastcentury left—wing literature promoted to portray proletariat heroes, Mao Dun hasportrayed bourgeoisie heroes, which ran counter to the left—wing literature's view. Was this behavior Mao Dun's initiative choice or the coincidence? What question didthe fact that Mao Dun was an important member of the 30s' left--wing literature, buthe portrayed the national capitalist like a hero illustrate? Why did Mao Dun appraisenational capitalist images in different historic periods inconsistently?……Ponderingon these questions thoroughly, we can discover Mao Dun's split personality. I'mtrying to conceal Mao Dun's innermost feeling world with psychoanalysis theory andpromulgate the real significance of Midnight. The third part discusses the national capitalist hero image's reconstruction byreaders in identical time as well as different times. First I analyzed the change ofhero's judgment standard which used to be "morality", and now is "strength" underthe special historic environment. This change has provided the premise for thenational capitalist accepted as hero. Next, I analyzed the influence on Mao Dun by"concealed reader" and "potential reader" before writing and in the process of writing. When the writing had ended, readers in different times also reconstructed the nationalcapitalist image. Thus, I could come to the conclusion that readers should be someother noticeable reason for Wu Sunfus' hero tragedy characteristic.
