As the only Song Cycle created by Beethoven, An die ferne Geliebte, OP.98 is also the first real Song Cycle in the musical history of Europe. This Song Cycle is based upon Beethoven's student, a medical major, Alois Jeitteles's six love lyrics. It took love as subject, cherishing gentle illusions and exciting passions; its pure lyrical style replaced the formerly dominant heroic style; its graceful and intoxicating melody built Beethoven's sacred love palace. These six lyrics are closely connected with one another, so they should be accomplished at a stretch. This Song Cycle is not only the real reflection of Beethoven's inner affection, but also a musician's strict and brave pursuit for art. It is a work deserving of attaching importance among Beethoven's later creations.By careful researches into the Song Cycle's practical performances and relevant materials, I am deeply attracted by the artistic charming of the work. At the same time, I also feel regret for the ignorance of such an excellent work. Therefore, to research deeply and carefully into this rarely cared Song Cycle will be a very significant work. I hope to uncover its mysterious and beautiful veils through my effort and research, and to make it obtain more music-lover's fondness, appreciation, performance and valuation.
