According to textual researches, Rizhao enjoys splendid prehistoric culture and is one ofthe birthplaces of Chinese civilization. Rizhao, located at the middle part of China, is also oneof the most important merging places of northern and southern cultures. Rizhao meanssunshine. It's such named because it's "the first to get the sunshine".The unique location and culture make it possible that southern and northern cultures herecommunicated and get merged, then generating its own special local arts.This thesis made some researches in the origin of Rizhao local customs and music as wellas their relations;it also generalized and analyzed the geographical, historical and culturalreasons for the evolution of Rizhao local customs and folk music. In the process of researchesand analysis some disappeared folk customs and music were exhumed. (i.e. Heshan temple fair,Jufeng flute tune, etc.) The research in splendid prehistoric culture of Rizhao was based on thefieldwork. Systematic fieldwork and recorded interview were also used in the researches onRizhao folk customs and music.The local customs and music of Rizhao are rich and colorful in content and forms;thisthesis is to classify and analyse them in details. Firstly, from the point of view of folk customs,the thesis probed into some main forms of local customs especially that of maritime people,and illustrated that: "enjoyment lies in earthliness and vice versa." Secondly, from the point ofview of local music, the thesis took steps to analysis the structures of local music from worksongs, chansons, to suits of songs. As to other popular local dance and operas, the thesis alsogave much detailed analysis.The thesis consists of three parts. The first part, preface is mainly about the proposition ofthe project, the process and object of researches. The second part involved the unique localcustoms and music. It generalized Rizhao local customs and music, analysed and introducedthe old and modern music of Rizhao. The third part aimed at completely analysing Rizhao localmusic from musical and sociological point of view and made deep analysis about the activeinfluence of Rizhao local music upon society.Lastly, the thesis analyzed the social functions and academic meaning of Rizhao localcustoms and music.
