Among the Han animal artworks, the horse is the most humanistic animals thatqualifies the representative of the prosperity and courage of Han empire. The researchof animal art of Han Dynasty, especially of horse, has aroused broad attention inacademic circle. Scholars and researchers in different fields have been doing fruitfulstudy from various perspectives based on different knowledge structures and researchpurposes.As a graduate student of Art, the writer has, from specialized knowledgestructure and research perspective, special sensitivity and practical knowledge ofmodeling and formal language. Focusing mainly on the modeling and formallanguage of horse of Han Dynasty, the thesis aims to carry on the study of formalrules, where also lies the creative and novel points different from other disciplines.From the perspective of formalist aestheticism, the form of a work of art servesas the existence way of the content. The form is the external carrier of the contentpresented through organization structure, art language and physical materials. Thethesis expounds the creation rules and aesthetic implication of the horse art works ofHan Dynasty, The paper also provides rich picture materials, which are chosen as therepresentatives according to the need of the argumentation, so that it combines thevisual language and the logicality of the text, which strengthen the technicality andargumentation of the thesis.The thesis includes four chapters. The preface generalizes the modelingcharacteristic of horse artwork of Han Dynasty, that is, vigorous and dynamic, and theevolution of the formal characteristic from Western Han Dynasty to Eastern HanDynasty. Chapter one classifies the horse artworks according to their materials. Themain part of the thesis lies in Chapter two, which generalizes the formalcharacteristics of the horse artworks and analyses their creation features. Chapterthree expounds the spiritual significance underneath the modeling and form of thehorse artworks, which sublimes the formal language to the spiritual connotation. Thelast part, Chapter four analyses the influence of the horse artwork of Han Dynastyover the art of later ages, especially over saddle horse artwork of Tang Dynasty aswell as modern and contemporary ages. The study of the formal language of the horseartwork of Han Dynasty requires the influx of multidisciplinary knowledge andtranscultural perspective. It requires the relevant knowledge in history, folklore,archaeology, and anthropology, etc.Horses symbolize strength and speed. China in Han Dynasty was an ascendingfeudalist empire. Emperor Wudi of Han Dynasty defended against the nomadic Hun'sattack, suppressed the rebellion of the imperial marquises, and sending ambassadorsto Western regions: all these show the unparalleled demeanor of the empire. Thevigorous and dynamic style of Han horse works rightly suits the unprecedentedunified Han Dynasty, which is characteried by political stability and economicalprosperity. It was in such a period in history that produced high achievement in themodeling art of horse.
