The set of traditional culture symbols of China has been the spiritual legacy which plays important roles as the carrier to convey the nation's culture, passion, and fundamental notions. It is an imperative building block for the expression of nation-specific filming and TV arts. In this work, we take on the investigations of applications of culture symbols to Chinese filming and TV design via a combination of the best part of the traditional culture of China to the contemporary ideology to develop a filming and TV design methodology that represents the unique virtues of Chinese culture.Nation-specific filming and TV design is based on the nation's culture system, the tradition of arts and the unique aesthetic appreciation system. Starting from the China-rooted aesthetics and the principles of filming and TV arts, and assisted by contemporary design arts, structuralism and symbolism, we have discussed the categories of ethnological culture symbols and their effect, functions and expressions in filming and TV arts. We have also discussed the evolution of the nation-specific style of filming and TV arts.Through our analyses we have found that there is a great diversity in the expressions of ethnological culture symbols, including image symbols, religious symbols, customary symbols, formalism-skeleton symbols, etc. Their functions in filming and TV arts might be different from each other, but there are intimate inter-relations between the cultural essence and aesthetic situation reflected by those symbols. They have evolved to be the organic and important components of the ethnological filming and TV arts, both in contents and in form. They have also provided the inspiration for creativity in ethnological filming and TV arts design. In particular, the formalism-skeleton symbols have imparted important influence on the creative work of ethnological filming and TV arts. This has been achieved through the unique manner of "not to be seen but to be felt". We further pointed out that there remain a large number of culture symbols in traditional Chinese paintings, calligraphy, opera, folk arts and crafts, and folk customs, etc. that can beuncovered, used and studied.
