With the development of modern technology and the expansion of the economic globalization, the dominant cultures of industrial countries have suppressed the development of regional cultures whose differences are gradually disappearing. Globalization challenges the traditional design theory and means and it also influences the traditional value system of environment art design. In front of the globalization and homogenization of the modernism, people gradually realize the disadvantages it has brought to us. Which is the way the environment art design should go? This is a problem that modern designers ought to face with and ruminate on. This thesis intends to search for an answer to how environment art design can reflect regional features against the background of globalization and pluralistic culture and it is expected to bring some new thoughts and enlightenments to environment art design. There are six parts in the thesis. The first part is introduction which talks about the background and the status quo of the study and the research methods employed in this thesis. Then, the second part is about the concept of regional feature and its natural quality and humanistic quality. The third part of the thesis expounds the reflection of regional features in China's traditional environment art. Through analyzing the regional features of China's classical gardens and traditional house buildings, the study of the relationship between regional features and environment art design goes further. The fourth part is about foreign architects' attempts to show regional features in their environment art design works. It is followed by the fifth part which deals with how the concept of regional features can be utilized in modern environment art design. The last part is the conclusion, which explains the opinion of the writer and sums up the significance of the thesis. This thesis is not a talk in generalities, but detailed expatiation that focuses on regional features and environment art design. Modern environment art design should absorb the essence of regional features, combine with the modern technology and be open to various aspects and angles. Only when the inner relation between modern architecture and traditional regional cultures is well studied, can tradition be mastered and innovated to a more sophisticated extend and can environment art design develop further.
