| Since the emergence of the epoch-making Capital International Airport Frescosin 1979, the works of frescos have mushroomed on the buildings in our country.Currently, the art of fresco is developing healthily. Yuan Yunfu mentions in the book"the restriction and different requirements of fresco in the function, beautyappreciation, concept, materials, and expressing language as well determines itsunpredictable future of modern fresco compared with the traditional one." With timeschanging, modern fresco is quite different from the traditional one. In the long history,materials have been playing a key role in expressing the cultural and artistic spirit offresco. It is the development of materials that promotes the richness of frescos andgoes harmoniously with the development of buildings and city construction.This thesis intends to discuss the material beauty of frescos in the followingaspects. First, it will point out the material is one of great factors to create beauty inmodern frescos, then talks about the propelling effect the development of materialshas on the frescos. In terms of the evolution of the frescos' function in history, thisstudy makes explorations into the significance and special status of the materials inthe modern fresco and groups frescos into three parts: primitive, ancient and modern,among which a comparative study will be made. Meanwhile this chapter emphasizesthe particularity of materials in the modern frescos. The third part of this study dealswith the connections between materials and frescos. The fourth part, also the core ofthis thesis, focuses on the dialectic relations between material beauty and artisticbeauty. The attribute of material beauty refers to the particularity of its own andpsychological effect on human being before materials come into frescos, while artisticbeauty of materials is based on the material beauty, combined with frescos, and isinvested with the spiritual and cultural meanings. The beauty of materials is sublimedin the fresco, and vice versa. The material beauty and artistic beauty cannot be divided,and reach perfect combination in the dialectic unity. The study stresses that the subjectof frescoes plays a leading part in the transition from the material beauty to artisticbeauty.The fifth part is concerned with the material beauty in the context of culture andart from the perspective of the history, times , the traditional material beauty and itsapplication, as well as material's environment, and the mingling native culture.Finally, the thesis ensures the importance of materials in modern frescos, and thesignificance of pursuit and explorations for material beauty. From another perspective,the thesis points out the relationship between the materials beauty and restrictiveconditions of the frescoes in the practical creation and application. In reality, therealization of material beauty is restricted by the attribute of the materials andaccording craftsmanship and economic factors as well. Fresco designers should bevested with economic mind, taking into consideration the interests of clients, anddevelop the low cost materials, using the limited fund to produce extra-valued andmost artistic materials of low cost frescos. The pursuit for material beauty, however,does not mean we are becoming slaves of materials. Only using the materialscreatively and actively can show the beauty of materials. In the fresco renaissance ofour country, the explorations and research will, for sure, bring new chances for thecreation and development of the fresco art. |
